I enjoyed the multi perspective approach to grieving and maintaining that sense of belonging with a passed beloved. I also think this is possible to experience with people that haven't crossed over; that we can get hints, winks and other messages from them through our surroundings - this may be a part of our minds predilection for predictions as well.
These predictive ideas reminded me of a Borderlands article I wrote on interoception, where we explored allostasis. ⭐
Thanks for sharing your article Emily. I love how you write and interoception and allostasis are such fascinating topics.
I agree about getting those hints and winks in advance.
Even though I love the science, I've had unexplained experiences i want to explore more in this space which speak to a deeper connection across space and time.
Understanding how our brains and body capture and understand info helps us tap into those things more!
I appreciate this scientific explanation but woo-woo me clings to the idea that the two hummingbirds that dive bomb me as I drink my morning coffee, really are my parents coming by to say hello. Sometimes smells are enough to trigger that sense of presence - a whiff of pumpkin pie is my grandma. I hope I never stop hearing, smelling or seeing these reminders though - they keep the memories fresh.
Such lovely memories Michelle and I agree with you. I know some part of it is my brain adjusting but the other part of me clings to the idea it's a spiritual hello too.
It's something I want to dive further into for sure and the other cultural explanations people have for these experiences. They're so special aren't they?
